Today, waste management has become a significant challenge for communities, not only due to the importance of recycling and valuing waste but also because of the need to minimize environmental impacts. In recent years, the amount of waste produced in urban areas, subsequently received by waste management centers, has increased primarily due to population growth. In addition to the substantial increase in waste generation, the diversity, pollutant characteristics, and environmental effects must be considered to implement an appropriate management strategy.

The organic fraction of urban waste represents the most impactful sources of odor due to the high concentration of biodegradable organic materials. Moreover, the methods employed for waste management in cities contribute to the generation of odors at various stages of waste processing and disposal. Biological, physical, and chemical management methods release potentially toxic substances such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), and nuisance odors, which negatively affect the local environment. Odor is now classified as one of the atmospheric pollutants that must be minimized to reduce effects. In urban waste disposal and processing centers, odor emissions may arise from various sources and areas, including wastewater treatment sites, landfills, leachate collection points, and/or the reception of mineral waste. Specifically, the treatment of organic waste is characterized by the production of offensive odors, depending on the type of raw material. New approaches to assess and minimize the impact of odors in organic waste management are critically important.

In this context, investigating and identifying effective methods to reduce odors from urban waste disposal and processing centers is of special significance, as it negatively impacts the mental and physical health of residents living near waste disposal facilities. Studies have shown that exposure to these odors can lead to respiratory problems, headaches, sleep disturbances, and increased stress and anxiety among residents. Odors from waste can also increase the attraction of insects and vectors, contributing to the spread of various diseases. Furthermore, the presence of odors around waste disposal centers can decrease real estate values, adversely affecting the housing market and potentially reducing the attraction of tourists and investors. Therefore, improving environmental conditions and reducing odors can contribute to the economic prosperity of areas near these facilities. Additionally, examining effective odor reduction methods at waste disposal sites can assist policymakers and urban managers in developing appropriate scientific and practical solutions for waste management. This examination may include analyzing innovative methods such as odor control technologies, additives for odor reduction, and biological methods, ultimately aiding in mitigating the negative effects of unpleasant odors.

Ultimately, addressing this issue is not only a scientific necessity but also a societal need. Given the increasing challenges in waste management and the need to preserve the environment and public health, conducting a systematic review of effective methods for odor reduction in urban waste disposal and processing centers can be an important step towards improving the quality of life for citizens and preserving the environment. This research can serve as a basis for the formulation of policies and operational programs in waste management at a macro level.
