in the course of time. In order to prevent such a harm to soil, the compost of municipal solid waste materials can be used as a safe method to remove heavy metals. Phytoremediation is one of the effective ways for dealing with low to average heavy metal-related pollutions in the environment (soil, compost, etc.). The present in-vitro study aimed at assessing the effect of two chelates (EDTA and (HN4)2SO4) in removing cadmium from the soil-compost in which alfalfa is planted. The experiment was conducted through random selection with five amounts of cadmium (10, 37.82, 105, 172.18, and 200 mg kg- of soil-compost), four amounts of EDTA (5, 6.46, 10, and 15 mg kg- of soil-compost), and 200 mg of (HN4)2SO4 in per kilogram of soil-compost. The results showed that the highest amount of cadmium was absorbed by alfalfa root. Two explanations can be provided for this phenomenon first, alfalfa is an accumulator and, second, the metal is easily available in the soil-compost around the root. Furthermore, the results showed that, in lower concentrations of cadmium, EDTA could be effective in enhancing the absorption of the heavy metal by alfalfa. In higher concentrations of cadmium, however, EDTA did not significantly increase the amount of absorbed cadmium. The increasing amount of absorbed cadmium in various treatments of compost can be attributed to the positive influence of organic materials on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil. Adding (NH4)2SO4 to EDTA is an environmentally friendly move. Also, this mixture reduces the risk of non-biological degradation of EDTA because of its lower concentration. After removing metal from compost, it can be used in producing crops with the aim of protecting soil and enhancing product efficiency. As a result, the compost of municipal solid water materials can be regarded as a suitable source to be used in agriculture |
