Identification and Evaluation of Estrogenic Compounds in Virgin and Recycled Papers Used in Food Packaging, A Systematic Review

Title

Principal Investigator

Given the increasing importance of the use of paper and cardboard in the food packaging industry due to their economic and environmental benefits, it is essential to examine the safety of these materials and evaluate the chemical compounds present in them, particularly estrogenic compounds. Chemical substances such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which may enter these materials during the production or recycling processes of paper and cardboard, have potential negative effects on human health. These compounds can lead to endocrine disruption, infertility, hormone-related cancers, and other hormone-related disorders.

Existing studies have shown that estrogenic and xenoestrogenic compounds may be present in food packaging papers, especially in recycled samples, posing a risk to consumer health through migration into food. Considering that no comprehensive systematic study has been conducted regarding the identification and assessment of the effects of these compounds in food packaging papers, this research could fill the existing information gap in this area and contribute to a comprehensive and scientific perspective. The results of this study may lead to the establishment of safety standards and effective policies to ensure consumer health and mitigate the risks posed by harmful chemical compounds in food packaging.
